 Experiencing Jesus – Experiencing Communion

By Haleigh Hearn

This summer I had the amazing opportunity to attend Youth in Ministry’s Big Picture Teen Conference at Milligan College. It was a life changing experience that I would do again and again. I was able to meet many incredible people and do many unbelievable things together; but what stood out to me the most was the communion supper.
I had never experienced anything like a communion supper. When I walked into the tent, it immediately reminded me of the Last Supper, and how I pictured it to be. The tables were set up in a hollow square and had all sorts of food items, as well as water and juice on top of them. We all sat around the outside facing one another.
Now, I’m not going to lie to you, but when we were told that all we were going to talk about during the supper was Jesus, I was ready for a long, boring supper. Well, quickly I found out I was wrong; I was very wrong. That supper turned out to be the most special time I have ever had. It opened my eyes to how amazing communion can be. I had never fully realized what communion was intended for until then.
We all took turns telling each other our favorite things about Jesus, or our favorite story about Him. Basically, the many different sides of Jesus came out in the open as each of us told what Jesus meant to us. The insights that many people had were so profound! I remember being blown away by that they had to say, and shocked that I hadn’t thought of those things myself.
When I got up from the table that night, I was actually saddened that our time together had ended. I had never felt that close to a group of people in my life and was content to stay and bask in the joy of being with others who had the same goal as me, which was sharing in the joy and love of our Savior. I walked away from the gathering with my previous preconceptions about communion shaken.
I realized I had limited communion to just about the cross. I had put it in a box of continuously remembering Jesus’ death and sacrifice over and over. While remembering Jesus’ death is not wrong, there is so much more to Jim than that. I had totally left out Jesus’ amazing life on earth, His contribution to the human race, and His love and care for everyone now and forever. I realized there is so much more to communion than what I thought.
I finally understood communion is about remembering Jesus as a whole. It is about remembering everything He has done and will do just so I could be with Him. He is the ultimate sacrifice, King, human, and lover. He has been, and is so many things to me and anyone who has ever accepted His gift of life.
Jesus instructed us to have communion because He knows we are human and are very forgetful. If we don’t have a specific time to continuously remember Him, then eventually He knows He will be forgotten. He knows that would be disastrous to us because we cannot survive without Him. That is why I love communion because it allows me to spend time with the Creator, and Ruler of the World, my King and my Daddy. It serves as a chance for every child of God to remember Him and remind us that we are His ambassadors and should strive to become more like Him every day.
