What is God's call for your life?

Ministry Skills Workshops

During the conference, you may choose
two of these ministry skill workshops --

Why Ministry Skills Workshops? Even if you aren't thinking about serving as a full-time vocational minister, everyone needs to know skills to serve as an effective leader on various ministry teams in your church.

Preaching

with David Robinson

Challenging - convicting - encouraging - piercing - inspiring - practical - life changing. Preaching can, at times, be all of these. So what makes a message good or bad? Students who choose preaching as their ministry skill will learn the basic principles of preaching and the practical steps for developing and delivering sermons. The preaching workshop will be lead by David Robinson. David is the Lead Pastor at Community Christian Church in Baltimore, Maryland. Formerly, David was the Student Ministry team leader and Preaching Associate for Mountain Christian Church in Joppa, MD, where he has served for the last 12 years.

Storytelling

With Tommy Oaks

Once upon a time, a King had a daughter who was beautiful beyond dreams...

Once upon a time, all the sounds were music, and everything was good in the world...

Once upon a time, and if it wasn't upon my time or upon our time, it was a good time, anyway, when jackdaws built their nest in old men's beards, and turkeys went up and down laneways smoking pipes of tobacco, and the roofs of Bunlahy were thatched with pancakes, and ponies, saddled and all, went along the roadways saying, "Who's for a ride?"...

So many interesting things start with "Once upon a time..."  That's why storytelling is a fine way to tell about just about anything. If you have something you want to tell (and don't the people of God have a story?), it's good to sharpen your storytelling skills.

Worship

with Marc Imboden

The worship workshop will explore all the aspects of worship, going way beyond music. We'll examine the idea that worship is more of "A Kiss Towards” -- the giving of our affection to God. Students can expect to explore new ways of expressing worship, including writing, the arts, music, drama, and service. Marc Imboden is a Worship Leader and song writer from Indianapolis who has been leading congregations all over the country in worship and concert for over 15 years.  Leadership

with Curtis Booher

Are leaders made or are they born? While there may be some truth to the phrase "natural born leader," many skills can be learned and developed that will enable anyone to become a better leader. These skills will be taught during this workshop along with a look at a variety of leadership styles. Students determine which style is the best fit for them. The workshop leader is Curtis Booher, Assistant Professor of Bible and Christian Ministries, Milligan College.

  Counseling

with Jack Holland

The Christian Care and Counseling workshop will give students an important introduction into conducting helpful conversations in critical life situations. The learning approach will have students practicing the skills in role-play scenarios. Jack Holland, assistant professor of Christian Care and Counseling at Emmanuel School of Religion, will teach this workshop.

Missions

with Tim Ross

Me? A missionary? Do I have what it takes? What does it take? Tim Ross, veteran church planter in Africa and minister at the Hopwood Christian Church, Milligan College, will lead the mission ministry skill workshop. Workshop topics include: preparation for a life of service, finding the right fit, and teamwork in missions.

Youth Ministry

with Brian Talty

As a teen yourself, is it fair to say God is shaping you?  Then it is likely that he has shaped you in your teen years through the hands of adults committed to you through youth ministry. Paul says to the Corinthian church, “For I pass on to you what I received from the Lord himself.” Youth Ministry is your opportunity to pass on to other teens that which you have received.  Together we’ll explore the opportunities we have, the skills needed and the expectations for you in Youth Ministry.

Brian Talty has served in youth ministry for eight years.  He currently serves as the Youth Minister of First Christian Church and the Instructor of Youth Ministry for Life Central Bible Institute in Decatur, Illinois.

 It's All About Relationships

With Bruce Montgomery

Do not attend this workshop if you have all of the friends you need and never have a problem with relationships. However, if you are like most of us and you struggle with times of loneliness and face challenges with friends and family, come join us. In this workshop you will learn how to develop and maintain healthy relationships. You will discover how to be affirming, real and vulnerable. The goal is to examine healthy relationships as a way of laying down our lives to help others discover the greatest relationship of all. Bruce Montgomery is an Associate Professor of Communications at Milligan College. Prior to Milligan he was a youth minister, a campus minister, and a senior minister over a span of nearly 30 years.
